Euro Nordic and the Interceptor 004
Last week we took care of a very special request. Euro Nordic Agencies represents Nirint Shipping in the port of Rotterdam making sure their vessels have a smooth and efficient turnaround. ‘MV Augusta Luna’ called at the Rhenus Deep Sea Terminal at Maasvlakte Rotterdam to load the Interceptor 004 in the belly of the ship. The Interceptor 004 is Ocean Cleanup's answer to tackle plastic waste in rivers.
Our colleagues from the Agency department were asked by Nirint Shipping to ensure a smooth port call. We reported all necessary formalities, mutually coordinated the transportation and took care of supplies to the ‘MV Augusta Luna’. Stefan van den Bosch, Operations Manager Agencies, “At Euro Nordic we act as an agent for about 250 ships per month, but some requests make our job even more special”.
The MV Augusta Luna is currently on her way to the seaport of Barcadera in Aruba. Ultimately, Intercepter 004 will be used to collect the plastics in the Ozama River in the Dominican Republic. Unfortunately, this tropical country has made headlines about its beaches -- and it wasn't for its miles of pristine white-sand beaches. It was for waves upon waves of trash that had engulfed the country.
The Ocean Cleanup
The 1,000 most polluting rivers are mainly responsible for ocean plastic pollution. By developing and using innovative technologies, Ocean Cleanup aims to tackle this worldwide issue. The Ocean Cleanup has developed the first scalable solution to efficiently intercept plastic in rivers before it reaches the oceans. By placing Interceptors in strategic locations in rivers around the world, Ocean Cleanup aims to halt 80% of plastic from entering the oceans in five years’ time.
